It’s almost here, the craziness that is the opening of free agency period at midnight on July 1st. It’s been known for awhile who the interested suitors are for Carmelo Anthony, but yesterday, it was confirmed that ‘Melo will be visiting Houston, Dallas and Chicago starting next week.
The Mavericks are always in the mix for free agents, at least in terms of throwing their hat into the ring. They were in on Deron Williams and Dwight Howard in previous offseasons, but have not managed to land a key free agent since winning the title in 2011. Of course, things changed a bit in Dallas yesterday when they re-acquired Tyson Chandler from the Knicks. Whether this makes them a more attractive option for Anthony remains to be seen. As of now, they appear to be an unlikely choice.
The Rockets and Bulls both present very compelling cases for Anthony, a superstar who wants to win now. Houston traded Omer Asik last night to create additional cap room, and are closing in on being able to make a max offer. A potential team-up with Dwight Howard, James Harden and Chandler Parsons has to be appealing. The Bulls give him a chance to stay in the Eastern Conference, where navigating a route to the Finals is easier. Pairing with a core of Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah would give Anthony a well-defined role, under tested coach Tom Thibodeau.
The Knicks will likely get a chance to present their case on why he should come back. If Phil Jackson doesn’t offer the max to Anthony, then that spending would have to go to making the team’s roster more attractive, a feat that’s still several moves away.
Other teams are expected to seek a sit-down with Anthony as well, that list will likely include the Lakers. We’ll start finding out which way the free agent is leaning very soon.
