The Charlotte Bobcats officially changed their name back to the Hornets a couple of weeks ago, and yesterday, they officially brought back mascot Hugo The Hornet. You can follow him on Twitter here, and he was all over Charlotte as part of his promo blitz. Here are some of the photos he took: posing for a picture, taking an up-close shot by the train tracks, hanging out uptown and plastering himself to a fire truck.
It’s cool to see the Hornets come back. There are a lot of great memories with a young Alonzo Mourning, Larry Johnson, Muggsy Bogues, Dell Curry and more. But these photos of Hugo creeped out out, like on a very serious level. This is nothing against Hugo, I just think recently there’s been a lot of questionable choices with mascots. In hockey, the Blackhawks introduced one of the scariest mascots I’ve ever seen. In basketball, you will remember how terrifying Pierre The Pelican was. If you remember, the Pelicans mascot was so scary, the team acknowledged it and gave him a makeover mid-season. The freakiest thing was they went with a very elaborate storyline for the makeover, which included putting his beak in a bandage and having him go through surgery, who was really disturbing in its own right.
I’m not sure if it’s because I’m nearing the end of the 20s and the whole idea of mascots are just whatever to me now, or if it’s because I recognize there’s a real human being underneath the costume and that’s all I can think about, but mascots are my phobia now.
Anyways, this too shall pass. In the meantime, I’d like to welcome Hugo The Hornet back into the league, I just won’t be clicking on too many of his photos, especially those up close shots.
