According to the LA Times, the Lakers have been in talks with Golden State to acquire the sharpshooting guard in exchange for the No. 7 picks in the 2014 NBA Draft which occurs next Thursday.
This deal between the Lakers and Warriors would be apart of a bigger deal for Kevin Love, who would be sent to the Warriors. Los Angeles is interested in the deal but everything is on hold because of a “difference in opinion within whether or not to keep Thompson while trying to obtain Love.” At this point, every team mine as well throw their best assets at the Minnesota Timberwolves to try and acquire Love.
The report from the LA Times also mentions that the Lakers might be attempting to select Joel Embiid next Thursday with the No. 7 selection. Joel Embiid will be out 4-to-6 months after having two screws placed in the navicular bone of his right foot. No one knows where Embiid will be selected after his latest injury, but it doesn’t look like he will get past the Boston Celtics at No. 6 or the Lakers at No. 7, that is if the Lakers don’t trade the pick for Thompson.
The Lakers only have Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash and Robert Sacre signed to guaranteed contracts next season. Adding Thompson, who averaged 18.4 points last season, would add an experienced player to a barren roster. However, Joel Embiid could be a franchise cornerstone if he recovers 100 percent from his foot injury. The Lakers have a tough decision to make, but if Love makes his way to the Warriors, the Lakers won’t be contending anytime soon in the Western Conference.
